Why is your blog not making money?

Could it be you’re using the wrong blogging technique?

You can see how to start a blog for cheap here, or watch how I create a niche website in less than 5 days and make money in only 8 days here

Blogging is one of the easiest ways to make money online, because it is such a simple model to implement.

Yes, it’s simple, but a lot of people get it wrong.

They think …

You simply create a blog and start posting content to it and create and audience of readers that know, like and follow you.

And they’d be right – sort of.

You see, there are literally thousands of people starting new blogs everyday with the intentions of making money from them. But most fail to make enough to pay for a cup of coffee, let alone the weekly grocery bills.

And this is largely because they are using the wrong blogging strategy from the outset.

Selecting the right strategy will determine whether you make money in the next 3 months or the next 3 years.

There’s an exact science to blogging for money that most people don’t have a clue about. It’s so subtle that most bloggers “miss it” – even if it’s starring them in the face.

Most people can create a blog – no problem, but not all can make money from them, and I believe it comes down to a few subtle clues that they miss.

These clues determine whether you’ll make money in 3 months or 3 years.

Or you can take this blog that you’re reading right now for instance.

It’s probably one of the ugliest one’s you’ve seen online – right – let’s be honest.

But guess what?

It’s less than six months old (from when I started writing this post) … it has a simple layout … a couple of pictures … and already it is generating an income.

The significants being that there are other blogs that are well established in the search engines that are still not earning a penny.

So whether your goal is to make $100 a month or even a $20,000 a month it can all be achieved using blogs coupled with the right strategy.

How much money you make is up to you, and how much effort you’re willing to put in.

Most people that I talk to don’t have a problem putting in the effort, if they understand that their efforts will be rewarded.

Therefore I am going to explain two blogging strategies that I use to make money with my blogs.

Or you can learn how to start your own blog and make money here.

Here are two strategies that you can use to start making money with your own blog.

Strategy 1 : Authority Blogs

Authority blogs are designed to focus all of it’s content on a niche subject.

In a way you become the go-to-guy for your particular niche.

Identifying your niche can prove to be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome, but once you have then everything else falls into place.

If you want to know how to identify your niche and what you should blog about to make money then read this.

If you want to build an authority website then you will need to create blog posts on a consistent basis.

By consistent I mean daily, however the reality is, if you work a full-time job, then creating a blog post at the end of the day is probably the last thing you want to do.

Therefore the next best thing is to create a blog post once or twice a week.

Just keep in mind that the more content you create, the more visitors you potentially get from the search engines. The more visitors you get, the higher the chances are of you making money.

Blogging on a consistent basis, trains the Google bot to keep coming back to your website more frequently, than if you are posting sporadically.

So the more content you post, the quicker the bot will spider your content and the faster you will get indexed and ranked in Google.

In the past I have had posts on the first page of Google within 5 minutes after I created it, because I posted daily.

Keyword Research

Focus your first 20 posts on generating buyer keyword traffic to your blog.

Buyer keywords differ from other keywords, primarily because when a searcher types those terms into Google, they are typically ready to make a buying decision, as opposed to being in research mode and searching for more information.

You are more likely to make a sale when a person is at the end of their research phrase, and is just looking for that one last piece of reassurance to know that they are making the right decision.

And this is where a lot of people that start a blog get it wrong and wonder why they aren’t making money – they focus on ranking for the wrong keywords.

I like to call this content ‘pillar content’ because they act as the foundation of your cash machine.

To find buyer keywords you will need a keyword research tool like the one I use here, which will identify which buyer keyword terms are the easiest to rank for in Google.

Once you identify them you simply write content that fulfills the searchers intent, which I show you how to do here.

Some say, all traffic is good, but I would rather make sales with 100 visitors a month, than make no sales but get 1000 visitors a month.

Strategy 2: Mini Websites

Keyword research is fundamental here.

(EMD) – exact match domains still work even after Penguin 2.0 which was rolled out 22 May 2013.

Although the ‘weight’ of EMD’s do not hold as much clout as they used to pre updates, they still hold enough to get some good rankings. Albeit it for a short a time in some cases.

These websites are nothing more than a landing page, however with the right on-page and off-page optimization you can rank in the search engines for the keyword extremely quickly.

All you have to do is create a one or two page wordpress blog with the domain as the keyword you want to rank for and then create back-links to get it ranked.

Obviously, if your keyword is really long like this:, then this is going to look really suspicious to Google and you are more likely to get deindexed for a domain name like this.

So pick a keyword that has got a reasonable number of searches, anything over 1000 local exact searches a month, with low competition.

Post at least 700 – 1000 words on the front page and get some back-links from websites with a page-rank 1 and above.

Vary the anchor text 70% general terms like ‘click here’, ‘learn more’, ‘go here’ etc, 30% anchor text and domain name. Just mix these percentages up depending on where you rank.

I have made sales using this technique in as little as two weeks.

  3. I have such a hard time trusting anything on the internets about making money online, but this actually seems like a place to learn…

  4. I have been posting 1-2 articles daily for past 25 months. I will be launching my site in a week. Can you please review the site and tell me if it’s on right track to make money.

    • Hi Vivek,
Your travel website appears to have been started 2015-06-08, not 25 months ago, unless you’re referring to another site. The main issue I see with it, is that it’s not targeting specific keywords.
It’s currently ranking for some abstract words on the 2nd and greater pages as shown here.

You’ll get more traffic and therefore a bigger audience by focusing more on keyword research.

      Hope that helps.

  5. This is an great article. I just launched my website although it’s been up for almost a month now. I do post blog everyday.

Can you please review my blog and see where I need to make adjustments more like keyword adjustments?

  6. Thank you so much for writing this article! I really appreciate it and am going to start using the tips with my website immediately.

  7. I started blogging this month, posting anywhere from 1-3 posts a day focusing on web-based tools, apps for biz, soft, Saas products.

The site was indexed quick enough and I now see 20-40 visits a day.

Do you see potential? Do you think I can do it? Would love to know your inputs Frank.

  8. Hey Frank, I’ve been blogging every day for 9 months, but my site is 2 years old. I only get 75 views from Google every day, is this because my niche is too competitive? MLM? Or bad keywords? Love your article!

    • Hey Erik, if you’ve been blogging for two years and not getting much traffic, then, it could be a dozen of reasons, however, the main course would probably be NOT targeting the right keywords to write your content around. Having said that, there are other factors that contribute to overall site rank.

  9. This is an incredible article. I just dispatched my site in spite of the fact that it’s been up for right around a month now. I do post the web journal consistently.

Could you please audit my website and see where I have to make conformities more like watchword alterations?

  10. I do think that frequent content does help, I have been experimenting around and have some sites with very little competition that rank really well with simply posting an article once a month, but in competitive niches the more often you add content the more traffic you will get.

  11. Hey Frank, am a new blogger and I have been blogging for about a month plus now.
I don’t have any person who teaches me on how to blog perfectly and earn money. I created the blog myself and I have been blogging alone without anybody directing me. Please if you can help me out so as to earn because am not perfect. If really you can help me out so as to earn as a real blogger, I will appreciate you.Thanks.

  13. Hi Frank,

I would like to tell you one thing frankly. I really loved this post.

What I learned from this post is that a blogger should focus on Buyer side keywords rather than choosing wrong keywords. It will help to make sales even if the visitor count is less. This is the best strategy to make from blogging for a start up blogger and for the long term this strategy will work.

    Thanks for this wonderful idea.
