Frugal living can sound like a second job: visiting five supermarkets, making everything from scratch and spending an evening hunting for a tiny discount.
If that approach leaves you exhausted, it probably won’t last.
A useful frugal habit should fit your life. It should help you spend thoughtfully while leaving room for comfort, enjoyment and your time.
These seven habits give you a practical starting point.

1. Look at repeated costs first
Before spending hours saving a few cents on groceries, review the things you pay for regularly.
Look at unused subscriptions, delivery charges, mobile plans and memberships. You don’t have to change everything. Choose one expense you can review without much effort.
A lower price only helps if the replacement still meets your needs. Check service limits, fees and cancellation costs before switching.
2. Shop your cupboards before the supermarket
Open the fridge, freezer and pantry before writing your shopping list.
Perhaps you already have rice, frozen vegetables and enough ingredients for two dinners. Build those meals into the week before adding more food to the trolley.
Keep a short freezer list if things tend to disappear behind the ice cream. Knowing what you own makes it easier to use it.
3. Compare the amount you will actually use
A larger packet may have a lower unit price, but that doesn’t make it the best purchase for every household.
If you use half and throw the rest away, the smaller packet may cost less overall. Check unit prices alongside shelf life, storage space and your available cash.
Buying more is useful when you can afford it, store it and use it.
4. Keep a “good enough” version of expensive routines
Think about the spending you enjoy. Could you keep the enjoyment while changing the frequency or format?
You might meet a friend for a walk and coffee rather than lunch, make a favourite weekend breakfast at home, or borrow books while buying only the ones you want to keep.
Choose the version you would happily repeat. A saving that makes you miserable is difficult to sustain.
5. Buy replacements when you need replacements
A sale can make an ordinary item feel urgent.
Keep a replacement list for clothing, household goods and appliances. When an offer appears, check whether the item is on your list, whether it suits your needs and whether the final price is competitive.
You can appreciate a bargain without making it yours.
6. Make maintenance part of the routine
Follow the care instructions for things you use regularly. Clean appliance filters, store food properly and deal with small clothing repairs before they become bigger ones.
For repairs, compare the cost, safety and likely remaining life of the item. Some things are worth fixing; others are ready to replace.
Frugal living includes knowing when spending is reasonable.
7. Set a limit on bargain hunting
Decide how much effort a saving deserves.
For an ordinary purchase, you might compare two suitable options and stop. For a major purchase, a longer comparison may be worthwhile.
Remember delivery charges, travel costs and the time involved. The cheapest advertised price isn’t always the cheapest way to get what you need.
Build a version of frugal living you can enjoy
Pick one habit for food, one for recurring costs and one for shopping. Try them for a month and notice which ones help.
You don’t need to become the person who never spends money. You can become the person who understands which spending is worth it.
