A year-long savings goal feels easier to understand when you can see exactly what happens each week.
The traditional 52 week savings challenge starts with $1 in week one. You add another dollar to the weekly deposit each week until you reach $52 in week 52. Complete every deposit and you will have contributed $1,378, excluding interest or fees.
The small beginning is appealing. The detail to notice is the finish: the final four deposits total $202. Before starting, check that those larger weeks will fit your budget.
Here is how the challenge works, plus two ways to adapt it.

Follow the weekly pattern
Your week number tells you how much to save:
| Week | Deposit | Total contributed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1 | $1 |
| 2 | $2 | $3 |
| 3 | $3 | $6 |
| 4 | $4 | $10 |
| 13 | $13 | $91 |
| 26 | $26 | $351 |
| 39 | $39 | $780 |
| 52 | $52 | $1,378 |
You can begin in any month. Label your tracker “Week 1” rather than waiting for the first week of January.
Give the savings a clear purpose
Decide what the completed challenge would help you pay for. It might be an unexpected bill, a household replacement, or part of an annual expense.
Write that purpose at the top of your tracker. A specific use makes it easier to decide whether to leave the money alone when another purchase catches your attention.
If you use some of it for the expense you intended to cover, record the withdrawal. Your tracker should show both deposits and the current balance.
Set a weekly appointment
Pick a day that fits your pay cycle. Check your bills, make the deposit you can afford, and mark it off.
The increasing deposits usually require a manual transfer or a changing payment instruction. Put a reminder beside your tracker so the amount does not rely on memory.
If you are paid fortnightly, you can combine two weeks. Weeks one and two require $3 together; weeks three and four require $7.
Option one: choose the order yourself
Write every amount from $1 to $52 on a sheet. Each week, choose an affordable amount, transfer it, and cross it off.
Use stronger weeks for larger deposits and expensive weeks for smaller ones. If you eventually complete every amount once, the total is still $1,378.
This version needs a little forward planning. Leaving all the largest amounts until the end creates the same pressure as the traditional version.
Option two: use the same amount every week
If you prefer a predictable transfer, save $26.50 each week for 52 weeks. That also totals $1,378.
The fixed amount is easier to automate, but it starts higher than the traditional challenge. Check whether it fits your budget before setting the transfer.
For a smaller goal, $5 weekly would contribute $260 over 52 weeks. You can use the same tracker format with a different amount.
What happens if you miss a week?
Mark it as missed and continue from what you can afford. Avoid doubling the next deposit if doing so would leave you short for essentials.
You can extend the finish date, reduce the target, or leave the missed amount unfilled. Record your actual balance instead of assuming the original target is still guaranteed.
For example, if you complete weeks one to 26, you have contributed $351. That money still has value even if your circumstances change halfway through the year.
Copy this tracker format
Create 52 rows in a notebook or spreadsheet using these columns:
| Week | Planned deposit | Actual deposit | Running balance | Done |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1 | |||
| 2 | $2 | |||
| 3 | $3 |
Continue the planned deposits through $52, or enter your chosen fixed amount. Add a note whenever you withdraw money so the balance remains accurate.
Start by checking the biggest deposit your plan requires. If that amount feels manageable, make week one’s transfer and mark the first box.
Save this 52 week savings challenge so you can return to the amounts whenever you need them.
