Mary Kay Review : Is A Legit Company that Offers an Opportunity to Make Money
Mary Kay is one of the oldest MLM companies out there, it was established in 1963. It was founded by Mary Kay Ash and her son, Richard Rogers.
The company started with only 5 products to offer, but now it has thousands of different beauty and cosmetic products available.
But the company’s goal is not just to make women beautiful, they also want to empower them and their families, which is why they also offer a business opportunity through their MLM business model.
Based on what I’ve seen so far, I can say that Mary Kay is a legit company that offers beauty products and provides an opportunity to make money on the side.
The fact that the company has been in business since 1963 is already a testament to how solid and well-known it is in the industry.
You know that this is not just a scam because it wouldn’t last this long if it was. Of course, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any issues or problems with this opportunity.
One of the most common issues about this opportunity is that the business itself can be very expensive to start and maintain.
You also have to deal with a saturated market due to it being around for a while now. There’s also the fact that the company changes the formula of their products quite often.

Mary Kay is designed for two types of people with one being those who are looking for good beauty and cosmetic products. The other type are those who are looking for opportunities to make money on the side.
If you are looking for beauty products, Mary Kay can definitely offer you that. The products they offer are known for being good quality and are effective. Of course, there are some complaints here and there, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
If you are looking for a money making opportunity, Mary Kay provides an MLM opportunity.
You make money as an independent distributor, selling the different products that the company has. You also get to earn more money if you build a team of distributors under you.
In the next section, I’ll discuss in more detail how Mary Kay works and how much it costs to start. I’ll also discuss briefly the available products.
How Does Mary Kay Work?
Mary Kay Ash is an MLM company that sells beauty and cosmetic products. As an MLM company, this means they also provide an opportunity to make money.
You need to become an independent distributor in order to make money with this company. Before we discuss how the process works, let’s first talk briefly about the company’s products.
The company has a lot of different products but all of them fall under several main categories like Skincare, Fragrance, Body & Sun, Makeup, Gifts, and Men’s.
The company’s products are known to be good quality and are effective. Their philosophy is to put the customer first. So, they make sure they only put out the very best possible product on the market.
The company also has a strong research team, consisting of expert chemists, dermatologists, scientists, and more.
Of course, there are still some people who complain or have issues with them. But the number of negative comments are very few compared to the number of positive comments and reviews.
Prices for the products will vary, depending on the type of product you get.
Now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to discuss the business side of the opportunity.
Now, in order to make money with Mary Kay, you need to become one of their independent distributors first. The company offers a lot of bonuses and commissions in their compensation plan.
This is typical of an MLM company, to provide a lot of different ways for members to make money. Though there are a lot of different ways, it really just comes down to two main ones.
Earning through retail commissions, meaning you earn a commission whenever you personally sell the products. and earning bonuses and commissions by building your team of independent distributors.
This is basically earning bonuses whenever members in your downline are able to sell the product. There are also ranks and levels, and the higher your level is the more money you can earn.
It’s hard to find out how the compensation plan works as Mary Kay doen’t go into the details of this on their website. You’ll need to contact an actual distributor to find out more. They do state that you can earn up to 40% of your sales.
As for becoming a distributor, the registration fee is only $100. However, you are required to make an order of $225 worth of products every three months to keep your account active.
It’s like you’ll have to spend $75 every month in order for your account to remain active and for you to receive commissions and bonuses.
But once you reach National Sales Director Level or above, the requirement goes away.
What People are Saying about Mary Kay?
Now, the reviews and comments about Mary Kay are generally mixed, with the balance skewing more towards the positives than the negatives.
A lot of people are happy with the products that the company offers, saying that they’re effective and that they work. As for the opportunity to make money, the recommendations are not quite so positive.
For one, this MLM business can be expensive to maintain. The registration will only cost $100, but you’ll be required to spend at least $225 every 3 months or $75 a month to keep your account active.
You are basically required to purchase products. The company says that this is for storing products for future customers.
Now that would be good if you have customers but if you don’t have any to purchase the products, then you are stuck with products you may not want.
Another issue is that the market for Mary Kay is very saturated already. It’s bad enough that making money with MLM is very hard, but it’s even harder when the market is already saturated.
As they’ve been around since 1963, the company likely has millions of independent distributors. This puts newbies at a huge disadvantage as there’s a big possibility their personal network has already encountered a Mary Kay distributor before.
One of the key things to succeed in MLM is to start early when the company is still young. Starting late or when it’s already established means you’ll have to deal with a lot more competition.
Another issue with Mary Kay is that the company changes the formula of their products regularly. This means you are likely to get stuck with outdated products and what’s worse, the company won’t even buy back old products or allow them to be changed.
It is up to you to sell, use or dispose of these products and that could mean money down the drain which is just unfortunate for you.
What I Like about Mary Kay
Now that we know what Mary Kay is and what it is offering, it’s time to discuss what I like about this opportunity.
- The first thing that I like about Mary Kay is that the company is established and well-known. They’ve been around since 1963, which means they have already established their place and reputation in the industry. This also means your customers probably already know about their products making them easier to sell.
- Another thing that I like about Mary Kay is the fact that the products they offer are of good quality. There are more people who are saying positive things about the products than negative. This shows that the companys products really work and that they sort out any problems or issues.
- I also like Mary Kay provides a lot of opportunities for you to make money. You just need to meet the criteria needed in order to qualify to receive the many bonus and commissions the company provides.
What I Dislike about Mary Kay
Of course, not everything about Mary Kay is good and dandy, as this opportunity also has several things that I don’t like.
- The first thing that I don’t like about Mary Kay is the fact that you need to buy products in order to maintain your active status. This could be a problem because not only are you required to spend money which you may not get back if you are unable to sell the products, but you also have to store them. Sure, this won’t be a problem if you have regular customers who always purchase products from you. But if you don’t you’ll lose money and be stuck with a lot of unwanted products.
- I’m also not a fan of Mary Kay constantly changing the formula of the products. I understand the need to keep on improving, but at least the company should help its distributors deal with outdated products. At least buy them back or provide huge discounts when it comes to exchanging the old products for the new ones. This may show that the company only really care about lining their pockets rather than empowering their distributors.
Do I Recommend Mary Kay?
After learning more about Mary Kay and what it can really brings to the table, I can say that this is an opportunity that I don’t really recommend.
It’s already hard enough to make money with an MLM opportunity as it’s not really designed to make it easy for distributors.
But it’s even harder with this company, considering it has been around for close to 60 years. This means that the market for Mary Kay products is already very saturated.
So your chances of succeeding in this opportunity are already slim. Add in the fact that the company also requires you purchase $225 worth of products every 3 months, this shows you could lose money as well.
I believe there are a lot of better money-making opportunities out there than what Mary Kay offers. It’s may be best if you check them out first and just be a buyer of the company’s products instead of being a distributor.
