This post is going to be kind of unusual, in that it is a case study, but it is an open case study – meaning the results haven’t quite come in yet.
What that means is that we have a starting point, but we don’t have and ending point – yet.
So depending on when you read this post, the case study might have run its course or just begun.
The reason why I created this case study like this, is so that you will be able to follow along as the results unfold, whatever the results maybe.
So instead of me waiting for the results and then publishing the outcome, whether they were good or bad, you will be able to see for yourself and comment on the results in real-time.
How did I come up with this case study?
I was reading an article yesterday that said social media sharing will help to rank your articles in the search engines. I found another article or video, I can’t remember, that corroborated what I read. So I thought it was worth seeing if what they said was true.
To generate social media shares from Google+, Facebook and Twitter to a webpage that I want to rank in Google.
We know that both Facebook and Twitter have a lot of credibility in the ‘eyes’ of the search engines, Google even says this themselves, and with Google+ belonging to Google, it makes sense that they would favor their own signals or place more weight on their own signals than the other two, just like they do for Youtube videos in organic search.
Therefore, getting shares in all three should be a clear indication to Google, that the information is share worthy and as a result should rank higher in organic search.
So, lets see how it actually plays out in reality.
I created an article from a previous case study on TribePro and depending on where you are in the world it will either be on the front page of google for the keyword phrase “does tribepro work” or on the second or third page.
Go a head type it into Google now and see which page it is on in your part of the world.
Can you see me?
In my part of the world it is on the first page of Google, sitting in the tenth position as shown in the picture below.
So all things being equal it should rise in the rankings after the case study
So to do this, I went to Fiverr as I have done with previous case studies and bought a Fiverr gig that would give me the necessary shares.
Here’s what I ordered.
So lets wait and see what happens.
[EDIT] So the Fiverr gig has run it’s course and I now have 38 tweets, 38 Facebook likes and 36 Google plus shares. But where am I in the serps?
If you do a search in Google for “does tribepro work” you will see that I have dropped from page one to page two. So as far as social media shares are concerned, it didn’t do much for my rankings in this particular experiment.
Analyzing my traffic stats it shows a trickle of traffic come in from Facebook.
