If you’re looking for work as a freelance writer, videographer, photographer or designer, then Skyword might be a company worth considering.
Skyword is a company that provides content marketing solutions for top-tier companies to help them analyse, develop and scale their content marketing strategies.
To accomplish this, they have created a platform that allows freelance content makers to register their details with the company, who then find content marketing jobs that fit both the brand and the freelancer.
This opportunity is available to freelancers around the world, however, is limited to certain countries and currency supported by Skyword that you can find on their website.
It is a good opportunity for freelancers with a proven work history to not only get more work, but to enhance their portfolio of clients they have worked for.

What is Skyword?
Skyword is essentially a content marketing company founded by Tom Gerace in December 2010.
He found that people were gathering information through internet search and social media, rather than the morning paper or evening news. The future of digital marketing lay in the content people were clicking on — not in ads trying to interrupt those billions of searches.
Skyword allows top-tier brands to produce content at scale by hiring the right freelancers with proven skills and industry knowledge.
They like to market themselves as “Experts in scalable sustainable content marketing”.
Who uses Skyword?
There are two groups of people who use Skyword.
The first group are big brands who are wanting to scale their reach online through content marketing, and the second group are freelance writers, videographers, photographers and designers who are looking for work.
How To Join Skyword
Signing up to Skyword is a fairly straight forward process.
You will be joining as a freelance content marketer in one of four different categories which include writer, videographer, photographer or designer.
You will go through a four step process which includes telling them where you want to specialize.
Step 1) Simply select one and click on the continue button.
Step 2) From there you will create your account by simply entering your email address and password.
Step 3) Once you’ve done that, go to your dashboard and fill out your profile. Your profile, is where potential clients will see your work history and determine whether you’re a good fit for their brand.
Step 4) They have a social media section where you can link all of your social media accounts and websites for them to view.
You are also required to have a Twitter account to complete your profile setup.
Another mandatory account is Paypal, since this is the ONLY method in which payments are made.
As you can imagine they will also need some samples of your work to show case to clients.
If you’re a writer, you will need 3 examples of your work in pdf form, or if you have content pieces online that attribute credit to you, you can also use these articles and provide the URL’s of the articles in your portfolio.
They are looking for people to join worldwide. When you join the site they will have a listing of acceptable countries that can join. Check the listing and see if your country is listed.
How Does Skyword Work?
Since your profile is the key to you landing freelance work it is imperative that you keep this up to date.
Skyword, will match your skills and work experience with potential clients and if you’re a good match and they are willing to work with you, you will get the gig.
You can potentially work with many different brands over time and the pay rate is based on a project by project basis instead of on a single word, video, photo or design bases.
Each client determines the pay rate in conjunction with you and will make payment twice a month.
For some projects like video work a 50% payment may be paid up front and the balance paid out after the project is completed. But once again this is determined by the client and the agreement you have with them.
How Do You Make Money With Skyword?
Like all freelance jobs, once you’ve been selected to produce content for a client your pay can be negotiated between you and the channel owner.
Every channel has a different pay rate, some pay more than others depending on what the job entails and what they’re willing to pay for it.
Therefore your pay can vary as a result.
Payment is made twice a month, usually on the 15th and 30th of the month respectively. And in order to receive payment from the client you are required to have a Paypal account.
What I Like about Skyword
- You get the opportunity to work with top-tier brands including MasterCard, Iron Mountain, Hortonsworks, IBM, Toms RiteAid and more, which can enhance your opportunity for future freelance jobs.
- Whilst, the pay rate is different for most projects and individual freelancers, I would assume that the pay rates would be much higher than the conventional content mill website, since these top-teir brands have much larger content marketing budgets.
- I do like that fact that they pay twice per month.
What I Don’t Like about Skyword
- There isn’t much that I don’t like about this business other than the fact that it is more aimed at freelancers who have a proven work history as a freelancer. Given the clients Skyword service I can understand why, however, it does exclude a number of good writers who don’t have the work history.
- I don’t like that they have a limit on the countries they allow to join. But I also understand the limitation is as a result of Paypal currency limitations as opposed to Skyword.
Do I Recommend Skyword?
Skyword is definitely a legitimate company you can join to get great freelance gigs. You will have to have both a Twitter and Paypal account in order for you to work as a freelancer for the company for reasons I stated above.
Each project has different requirements and as such your pay will be subject to the client or channel owner you will be working with and the amount you both agree on.
The fact that you will be paid twice a month is great and that for some projects like videography the client can pay you 50% up front to start work, which can be useful to a lot of videographers.
These projects typically last longer than your conventional content mill gig, so in that respect it is definitely worth considering. And because Skyword is always looking for good freelancers to work with, this might be a good long term freelancing gig if you do a good job.
Therefore, I would recommend working as a freelance content marketer for Skyword if you have a proven work history as a freelancer.
Having said that, it would be remiss of me to mention the fact that these big brand companies see enough value in content marketing that they’re willing to pay you to create it.
So, while not create a content marketing strategy that works for you, where you benefit from your own work.
I recommend you read this review to learn how to get started.
