DoTERRA Review: Legit MLM Or Scam?

DoTERRA is a multi-level marketing business that was founded in 2008 by David Stirling and several other people.

DoTERRA is another health and wellness company that has a wide variety of products in stock such as essential oils, skin care products, supplements, weight loss pills, and hair care products.

It’s another one of those health and wellness companies that use a multi-level marketing system to lure people in to create a powerful independent sales force. It is similar to Juice Plus.

Like most MLM companies, DoTERRA’s sales force uses false promises and other hooks to recruit new members for their teams. Chances are that you have encountered some of these salesmen and you’re here because you’re not sure if this company is a scam or a legitimate business opportunity.

In this article, I’ll do my best to explain the system to you and you can decide if it’s worth your time or not. I won’t review the company’s products but I will take a look at the business opportunity.

Can You Make Money with DoTERRA?

The idea is to join the sales team and earn money by either recruiting new members or selling the company’s products. It’s supposed to be one of those home-based business opportunities.

The truth is that you can make some money with DoTERRA’s business opportunity but it requires a lot more work that you are led to believe.

DoTERRA’s compensation plan is identical to other network marketing companies. There are a few different ways to earn bonuses: recruit new people, sell products, and earn rewards.

As a contractor, you will be able to purchase products for at a 25% discount and then sell them for a profit. Granted, the profit margins are low but it is still possible to earn some extra cash.

But the best way to make money with this company is by recruiting new people because when you recruit new people you receive a bonus when they make a sale.

So the idea is to start sharing the news with everyone who will listen and see how many new people you can collect in your down-line. This kind of marketing has led a to a few problems.

For starters, the FDA has recently issued a warning against DoTERRA for unethical marketing tactics. Some DoTERRA contractors have resorted to blatantly lying to people about the health products. Some have even said that the essential oils can cure Ebola and Alzheimer’s disease!

That’s one of the reasons this company has been in the hot seat.

DoTERRA also allows independent contractors to create a personalize online store for their DoTERRA products. You simply have to send people to your store and whenever someone purchase from the store you receive a commission.

What I Liked:

There is a market for essential oils. More and more people are beginning to use essential oils on a daily basis and they claim that the oils have benefited their lives in numerous ways.

From a business point of view, essential oils are a good investment, there is a high demand for these kind of health products. It seems like the demand will continue to increase far-into the future.

But that doesn’t mean this is the business opportunity of a lifetime. Just because the product has some health benefits does not mean you will be able to make a lot of money selling it.

What I Didn’t Like:

There are a few key limitations to this business opportunity that downgrade it’s value.

First, the essential oils are plain expensive. Some bottles cost more than $40 for a 15 milliliter bottle!

Granted, the oils do last for a long-time, but most people won’t want to spend that kind of money on a tiny bottle of oil.

Secondly, the profit margins are too small. The company claims that each new contractor will be able to purchase the products at a 25% retail price. You have to buy the products from the company and then sell them again for a profit.

How much do you think the company really pays to manufacture the oils? Probably not much at all.

Third, it’s difficult to sell people these opportunities. Most people are not interested in joining a network marketing company that’s based on recruiting new people. Most people are not natural salesmen.

This company encourages members to share the opportunity with friends and family but friends and family are rarely the type of people that can make the most of these opportunities.

So, it’s just not that easy to sell these oils and make money with DoTERRA.

One more problem with this opportunity is that the selection products is relatively small, with a focus on essential oils.

This further limits a contractor’s potential sales.

In my opinion, it would only be possible to make decent money with this system if you have a massive contact list of people who are interested in health products or if you have a high-traffic health website.

Conclusion:

I don’t recommend this opportunity to anyone who is new to making money online.

There is very little business training involved. You won’t learn how to build a business from scratch or how to drive traffic. You’re only told to share the opportunity with your friends but we all know our friends hate it when we try to recruit them to these sketchy opportunities.

I still believe the best way to make money from the internet is to be in total control; create your own business that nobody else can control. Otherwise you will have no idea what might happen in the future.

These MLM schemes can be shutdown at anytime, it would be a shame if all your hard work went to waste.
